Somatic Therapy: Returning to the Body

Often, we navigate the world primarily from our minds, analyzing and planning while becoming increasingly disconnected from the physical experience of being alive. Somatic therapy is a gentle, body-centered approach that recognizes the deep connection between your physiological state and your emotional well-being.

What is Somatic Therapy?

The word 'somatic' comes from the Greek word 'soma,' meaning body. While traditional talk therapy focuses on the Narrative, somatic therapy works with the nervous system. Traumatic memories and chronic stress are often stored in our muscles and tissues, manifesting as tension, numbness, or a constant sense of being 'on edge.' By shifting our focus to these inner sensations, we can begin to release what has been held.

How it Helps
  • Reduces the feeling of persistent 'fight or flight' or physical hyper-arousal.
  • Develops a greater sense of grounding and presence in the current moment.
  • Increases emotional regulation by understanding your body's early cues.
  • Helps bridge the gap between knowing something logically and feeling it emotionally.
The Experience of a Session

Sessions move at a pace that honors your comfort and safety. We might begin by noticing your breath or the physical points of contact between your body and the chair. We pay gentle attention to sensations such as tightness, warmth, or subtle shifts, and explore how small movements or mindful awareness can help your nervous system find a state of greater ease.

Who it is For

Somatic therapy may be particularly helpful for those who feel disconnected from their bodies, find themselves stuck in cycles of stress, or are processing the physical impacts of trauma. More broadly, it can support anyone looking to feel more grounded, connected, and present within themselves.
